Addis, South & East circuit
♨️ Wenchi Crater Lake
A volcano's caldera, a lake, and hot springs — a weekend from Addis
A collapsed volcano three and a half hours west of Addis, its caldera filled with a green-blue lake and islands. One island holds a monastery church. Hot springs steam on the shore, waterfalls drop off the outer slopes, and the only way down is on foot or on a hired horse. The closest thing to a real escape you can reach from the capital and back inside a weekend.
What makes it worth the journey
- ✦Horse or hike 4 km down the crater wall to the lakeshore
- ✦Boat across to Debre Island and the Kirkos church
- ✦Natural hot springs on the shore — the reward for the climb back
- ✦Waterfalls and terraced farmland on the crater's outer slopes
- ✦The rim viewpoint at over 3,000 m, looking down onto the whole caldera
Where to stay in Wenchi Crater Lake
Not every hotel — these hotels. Each one is under contract with us: vetted, visited, and accountable. That's the whole point.
Where Wenchi Crater Lake sits
Ethiopia is bigger than it looks — France and Germany would fit inside it together. Distance is the thing most itineraries get wrong, so here is where you'd actually be.
- Getting there
- 155 km west of Addis via Wolisso or Ambo — about 3.5 hours each way by road. No airport; this is a drive.
- Altitude
- Crater rim above 3,000 m; the lake sits roughly 4 km and 300 m below — the climb back up is the hard part
Where to go next
These pair naturally with this leg — same circuit, sensible road and air links, no backtracking.
