Addis, South & East circuit

🐊 Arba Minch

Forty springs, two lakes, and the crocodile market

Forty springs feed a groundwater forest below the town, and two of Ethiopia's largest Rift Valley lakes sit either side of a ridge called the Bridge of God. Lake Chamo holds the crocodile market — giant Nile crocodiles hauled out on the shore in numbers you won't see elsewhere in Africa. Behind and above, the Dorze weave cotton in bamboo houses shaped like elephants.

What makes it worth the journey

  • Lake Chamo's crocodile market — the largest Nile crocodiles in Africa, seen from a boat
  • Nechisar National Park: Burchell's zebra, Swayne's hartebeest and greater kudu on open plain
  • The Bridge of God, the ridge dividing Lakes Abaya and Chamo
  • Dorze village on the Guge escarpment — bamboo elephant houses and backstrap weavers
  • The forty springs themselves, in groundwater forest below the town

Where to stay in Arba Minch

Not every hotel — these hotels. Each one is under contract with us: vetted, visited, and accountable. That's the whole point.

Paradise Lodge Arba Minch

Thatched huts in a 123-room lodge on the escarpment, pool and sauna, and the Abaya restaurant looking straight down the rift. Not every room has air conditioning — worth requesting one, as Arba Minch runs hot.

Where Arba Minch sits

Ethiopia is bigger than it looks — France and Germany would fit inside it together. Distance is the thing most itineraries get wrong, so here is where you'd actually be.

Getting there
