Historic North circuit
🗿 Axum
Obelisks of a 3,000-year-old empire — and, tradition says, the Ark

The capital of the Aksumite Empire that once traded with Rome and India. Granite stelae up to 33 m carved seventeen centuries ago, underground royal tombs, and the chapel Ethiopian Orthodox tradition holds as the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. This is deep-history Ethiopia; pair it with Lalibela on a full northern circuit.

Where Axum sits
Ethiopia is bigger than it looks — France and Germany would fit inside it together. Distance is the thing most itineraries get wrong, so here is where you'd actually be.
- Getting there
- Daily ET flights Addis→Axum, often via Lalibela — the circuit routing is the point.
- Altitude
- 2,131 m
