Timkat — Ethiopian Epiphany, 19 January — is the one date on the Ethiopian calendar that fills every hotel bed in Gondar and Lalibela months ahead. It is also, by a comfortable margin, the most extraordinary thing you can attend in this country: church tabots carried out under sequined umbrellas, all-night vigils, and at dawn in Gondar, thousands of white-robed pilgrims around Fasilides' 17th-century bath.
