La respuesta corta

Yes — almost all nationalities need a visa for Ethiopia, and almost everyone should get the official e-visa online at evisa.gov.et before flying. Tourist e-visas (30 or 90 days, single entry) are typically issued within 1–3 business days and cost around US$82 for 30 days. Kenyan and Djiboutian citizens are among the few exempt; African Union laissez-passer holders have separate rules. Always apply on the official government site — copycat visa sites overcharge for the same document.

How does the Ethiopian e-visa work?

Apply at evisa.gov.et (the official Immigration and Citizenship Service portal) with a passport scan, a photo, and a card payment. Processing is normally 1–3 business days; the visa arrives by email as a PDF you show at immigration in Addis.

Your passport must be valid at least 6 months from your arrival date. The e-visa is valid for entry through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport — if you plan a land border crossing, you need an embassy visa instead.

What does it cost and how long can I stay?

Single-entry tourist e-visas: roughly US$82 for 30 days or US$202 for 90 days (official portal prices; third-party sites add markup for nothing).

Extensions are possible in Addis at the Immigration head office, but plan your trip within your visa window — extensions consume a day of your trip.

Is visa-on-arrival still available?

Ethiopia has repeatedly changed visa-on-arrival availability over the years. As of our last verification it should not be relied on — the e-visa takes days and removes all airport uncertainty. Apply before you fly.

What about transit visas for layovers?

If you have a long layover with Ethiopian Airlines, transit visas are available for eligible passengers who want to leave the airport, and ET has historically offered free city hotels for layovers over 8 hours on its own tickets. See our full Addis layover guide for current mechanics — this changes and we verify it monthly.

The honest caveat

Visa rules change without much notice. We verify this page monthly (date above), but confirm on evisa.gov.et before booking flights. When you book with MivonTravel, visa guidance for your specific passport is part of the concierge service.
