What does a 10-day northern circuit actually cost, line by line?
Sample: Addis (2n) → Lalibela (2n) → Gondar (2n) → Simiens (2n trek) → Addis (1n), mid-range, two people sharing. Per person: internal flights ~$350 (three ET domestic hops at resident-linked fares), hotels ~$450 (mix of $60–110/night), guides & entrance fees ~$300 (licensed guides, church tickets, park fees, mandatory scout), private vehicle days ~$250, food ~$150 ($10–20/day eating very well), misc/tips ~$100. Ground total: ≈ $1,600 per person.

The domestic flight trick everyone should know
Ethiopian Airlines domestic fares are roughly half price when your international ticket is also on Ethiopian. Addis→Lalibela can drop from ~$180 to ~$90 one-way. On a three-hop northern circuit this saves $250+ per person — often the difference that funds a Simien trek.

Where do budgets blow up?
Four classics: booking domestic flights separately from the international ticket (see above); festival-week accommodation left too late; private 4x4 days in remote areas ($120–180/day with driver — worth it, but budget it); and the Danakil, which is expensive to do safely ($400–700 for a multi-day expedition) and not a corner to cut.
A fifth, quieter one: unpriced 'free days' that turn into $150 of improvised taxis and tickets. An itinerary with everything priced beats a cheap-looking skeleton.
