What are Ethiopia's seasons, really?

Highland Ethiopia (most of where you'll travel) has one main wet season, kiremt, from June to September, and a long dry season from October to May. 'Winter' and 'summer' don't map — at 2,000+ m the temperature is springlike year-round: warm days, cool nights.

The Danakil Depression and eastern lowlands are the exception — brutally hot most of the year, best November–February.

Month by month, when should I go?

October–November: the sweet spot. Landscapes green from the rains, air washed clean, waterfalls full, fewer crowds than January.

December–January: peak season — festival season (Genna 7 Jan, Timkat 19 Jan), perfect trekking weather. Book Lalibela 4+ months ahead for Timkat.

February–March: still excellent and quieter; coffee harvest winds down in the south.

April–May: hot in the lowlands, occasional early rains, but perfectly workable and low-season prices.

June–September: the rains. Afternoon downpours, muddy park roads, cloud on the peaks — but also Ethiopia's emerald months, and Meskel (27 Sep) closes the season spectacularly. Fine for city + culture trips; wrong for trekking.

When are the festivals, exactly?

Ethiopia follows its own calendar; feast days fall on fixed Gregorian dates: Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) 7 January · Timkat (Epiphany) 19 January (20 in Ethiopian leap years) · Meskel (Finding of the True Cross) 27 September (28 in leap years) · Irreecha (Oromo thanksgiving) late September/early October in Bishoftu and Addis.

Timkat in Gondar or Lalibela and Meskel in Addis Ababa's Meskel Square are the two headline experiences. Demand spikes hard around both — this is when booking early genuinely matters.

When for wildlife — wolves, geladas, birds?

Ethiopian wolves on the Sanetti Plateau: visible year-round, easiest in the November–March dry months. Geladas in the Simiens: year-round, always. Endemic birding: November–February, when northern migrants join the residents.
